Reviewer guidelines

Reviewers safeguard the quality of what the journal publishes. This page summarizes what is expected of those who review for the Journal of Health Informatics.

The invitation

  • The invitation arrives by e-mail with the manuscript's title and abstract. Accept or decline through the e-mail button as soon as possible.
  • Decline when the topic is outside your field, when you cannot meet the deadline, or when you have a conflict of interest.
  • The review is due within 2 weeks of accepting. If you need more time, write to the editors before the deadline.

What to assess

The review is completed in the system, on 8 criteria scored from 1 to 5:

  1. Relevance and fit with the journal's scope.
  2. Clarity and pertinence of the objectives.
  3. Methodological rigor.
  4. Consistency between methods, data and results.
  5. Discussion and conclusions supported by the results.
  6. Title, abstract and organization of the text.
  7. Tables, figures and references.
  8. Originality and potential impact.

The assessment also covers ethical issues, the recommendation (accept, accept with minor revisions, re-review after revisions, or reject), comments to authors and confidential comments to the editors.

Writing the review

  • Clear, respectful and specific comments, pointing to section or passage, with what should change and why.
  • Separate what is required for publication from suggestions.
  • Do not include the recommendation or anything that identifies you in the comments to authors.

Confidentiality and AI

The manuscript is confidential. The journal authorizes the use of AI tools to support writing the review, in line with the ICMJE recommendations, without entering the manuscript into tools that cannot ensure confidentiality, and their use is declared in the confidential comments. See Artificial intelligence policy.

Recognition

The journal issues a review certificate for each completed review and, on request, a certificate of service as reviewer.
